Envoy Proxy up to 1.36.9/1.37.5/1.38.3/1.39.0 Path Matching access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Envoy Proxy Envoy up to 1.36.9/1.37.5/1.38.3/1.39.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Path Matching. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Envoy is an open source edge and service proxy designed for cloud-native applications. Prior to 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4, and 1.39.1, Envoy normally matches the raw request path, while servlet backends such as Apache Tomcat strip semicolon matrix parameters from each path segment before resolving the resource. Envoy's ignore_path_parameters_in_path_matching option instead truncates at the first semicolon and still does not match per-segment backend behavior. A remote client can use a parameterized protected segment, or a parameter on an earlier segment, to make Envoy select an unprotected fallback while the backend resolves the protected resource. The relevant scope boundary is that the bypass requires both a path-based Envoy decision and a backend that strips semicolon parameters per segment. This issue is fixed in versions 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4, and 1.39.1.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-73511 since 08/12/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4 or 1.39.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
