Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Shell Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The URL validation functionality in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, 6 SP1, 7 and 8, and the ShellExecute API function in Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, and Server 2003 SP2, does not properly process input parameters, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary local programs via a crafted URL, aka "URL Validation Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 11/15/2009. The weakness was shared 02/09/2010 by Brett Moore (Lostmon Lords) as MS10-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0027 since 12/14/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 67 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44417 (MS10-007: Vulnerability in Windows Shell Handler Could Allow Remote Code Execution (975713)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100078 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS10-002 and KB979352)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9436.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (55773), Tenable (44417), SecurityFocus (BID 37884†), OSVDB (61909†) and Secunia (SA38501†). The entries VDB-4079, VDB-51654, VDB-51653 and VDB-51652 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
