Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4, 6, and 6 SP1 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was presented 01/22/2010 by Haifei Li with Fortinet (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0247. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/11/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3728 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44110 (MS10-002: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (978207)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100078 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS10-002 and KB979352)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9425.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (55777), Tenable (44110), SecurityFocus (BID 37893†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24663†).
