A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version unknown). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Movie Maker. The bug was discovered 08/13/2009. The weakness was shared 03/09/2010 by Damian Frizza with CORE Security as MS10-016 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0265 since 01/07/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90588 (Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and Producer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-016)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-016 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
