A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Excel 2002/2003/2007 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3, Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac do not properly parse the Excel file format, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Microsoft Office Excel DbOrParamQry Record Parsing Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 11/03/2009. The weakness was published 03/09/2010 by Damian Frizza with Microsoft as MS10-017 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0264 since 01/07/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 126 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50065 (MS10-017: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980150) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110104 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-017)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-017 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9574.
