Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52 and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function construct_region of the component cxl region. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cxl/region: Validate partition index before array access construct_region() reads cxled->part and uses it to index cxlds->part[] without checking for a negative value. If the partition was never resolved, part remains at its initial value of -1, causing an out-of-bounds array access. Add a guard to return -EBUSY when part is negative. The check was dropped during a merge.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-97423 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 06322da06116f1ee52271dd4d84dc69580087df7/16329b510f76e5b824e05bf8add8b29850f1f16f is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
