Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component Terminal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Argument injection vulnerability in Terminal.app in Terminal in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5 through 10.5.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified URL schemes.
The bug was discovered 02/11/2008. The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2008 by FiSh with Sun Microsystems (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0042 since 01/03/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30255 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115711 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Security Update 2008-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-2-11)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40443), Tenable (30255), SecurityFocus (BID 27736†), OSVDB (41503†) and Secunia (SA28891†). The entries VDB-2864, VDB-3360, VDB-40976 and VDB-40975 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
