Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in X.org X11 (Windowing System Software) (version unknown). Affected is the function build_range of the component X Font Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the build_range function in X.Org X Font Server (xfs) before 1.0.5 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) QueryXBitmaps and (2) QueryXExtents protocol requests with crafted size values, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 10/02/2007. The weakness was published 10/03/2007 by Sean Larsson with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4568 since 08/28/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67634 (Oracle Linux 3 : XFree86 (ELSA-2008-0029)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117368 (CentOS Security Update for xorg (CESA-2008:0030)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15382. In this case the pattern |12 01 03 00|<|00 00 00|AAAA is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8987.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36919), Tenable (67634), SecurityFocus (BID 25898†), OSVDB (37721†) and Secunia (SA28891†).
