A vulnerability has been found in X.org X11 (Windowing System Software) (affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function swap_char2b of the component X Font Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The swap_char2b function in X.Org X Font Server (xfs) before 1.0.5 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) QueryXBitmaps and (2) QueryXExtents protocol requests with crafted size values that specify an arbitrary number of bytes to be swapped on the heap, which triggers heap corruption.
The bug was discovered 10/02/2007. The weakness was released 10/03/2007 by Sean Larsson with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4990 since 09/19/2007. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117368 (CentOS Security Update for xorg (CESA-2008:0030)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8987.
