Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function copy_from_user_mmap_sem. Performing a manipulation results in input validation.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0010. In addition, an exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function copy_from_user_mmap_sem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The copy_from_user_mmap_sem function in fs/splice.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.22 through 2.6.24 does not validate a certain userspace pointer before dereference, which allow local users to read from arbitrary kernel memory locations.
The issue has been introduced in 07/08/2007. The weakness was presented 02/12/2008 by Wojciech Purczynski with iSEC Security Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0010 since 12/03/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31028 (Debian DSA-1494-2 : linux-2.6 - missing access checks), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115715 (SuSE Linux Multiple Memory Access Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (5093), Tenable (31028), SecurityFocus (BID 27796†) and Secunia (SA28835†). See VDB-40989, VDB-40988 and VDB-40982 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
