It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). This affects the function vmsplice_to_pipe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The vmsplice_to_pipe function in Linux kernel 2.6.17 through 2.6.24.1 does not validate a certain userspace pointer before dereference, which allows local users to gain root privileges via crafted arguments in a vmsplice system call, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-0009 and CVE-2008-0010.
The bug was discovered 02/08/2008. The weakness was shared 02/12/2008 by Wojciech Purczynski with iSEC Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0600 since 02/05/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 126 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67651 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2008-0129)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165668 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:007)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40540), Exploit-DB (5092), Tenable (67651), SecurityFocus (BID 27801†) and OSVDB (41853†). The entries VDB-40983 and VDB-40982 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
