Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6 xusbatm out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component xusbatm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: xusbatm: don't rely on id table pointer arithmetic The current code is broken when dynamic ID is involved; in such cases usb_device_id parameter of probe lives on the heap and the pointer arithmetic will get an index that is wildly out of bound. xusbatm initialize the USB device IDs dynamically so it can just use driver_info too. Even with conversion, xusbatm still cannot support dynamic IDs, so also set no_dynamic_id.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-97539 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fad6cab36474758abf55c6419dd79a06a27fcefc/8944ef1bfda537aaf329c82e7a5f9faf61340aa9/f7db611d98b68d15661561d2cefa774208774ccc/eb6cd6d3d8abeac5d7e8251b898067184afdad8a is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
