Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6 Pegasus probe usb_device_id out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function probe of the component Pegasus. The manipulation of the argument usb_device_id with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: pegasus: don't rely on id table pointer arithmetic The current code is broken when dynamic ID is involved; in such cases usb_device_id parameter of probe lives on the heap and the pointer arithmetic will get an index that is wildly out of bound. Instead of keeping a side table for additional information, use driver_info field of the usb_device_id. The dynamic ID parsing code needs to be updated for this; convert it to just write to the reserved entry for dynamic ID and remove the weird loop.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-97540 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9425a13960ef38bac237608f25c9ee64ff113086/7654812b65047349ea4c111eed42c4315a00e462/61b84e964a829d534f24eab4cbd4035d22b52601/ce8101c331956bbd3e20681331dfd22eb7c1c1ea is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
