Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function tcon_super_cb of the component SMB Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: pin DFS superblock in iterator callback tcon_super_cb() stores a raw superblock pointer, but __cifs_get_super() takes its active reference only after iterate_supers_type() has dropped s_umount and its passive reference. Concurrent DFS automount expiry can therefore free the superblock before cifs_sb_active() uses it. A deterministic KASAN test reproduces the race as: BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in cifs_sb_active+0x77/0x80 The same test passes with this change applied. Take the active reference in the callback while iterate_supers_type() still holds s_umount shared. cifs_put_tcp_super() remains the matching release.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-97562 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ea43a15cea36dc5ddd832be5bddeac7dd804cbcf/a6b6561522212af852c9ad8a7dca8d59ef2c7377/5b01a8c0209690db75341528ec53fd87e0ac1460/d806d5a85dcbe2a0f181b2f0f9f61ddfbefa1818 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
