Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 v4l2-ctrls std_validate_compound column_width_minus1/row_height_minus1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as very critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. This affects the function std_validate_compound of the component v4l2-ctrls. Executing a manipulation of the argument column_width_minus1/row_height_minus1 can lead to memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-97576. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function std_validate_compound of the component v4l2-ctrls. The manipulation of the argument column_width_minus1/row_height_minus1 with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: v4l2-ctrls: validate HEVC tile counts The stateless HEVC decoders read num_tile_columns_minus1 + 1 entries from column_width_minus1[] and num_tile_rows_minus1 + 1 from row_height_minus1[] and use them as tile-loop bounds, but std_validate_compound() does not bound these u8 counts. Reject a V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_HEVC_PPS with tiling enabled whose tile counts exceed the uAPI array capacity, mirroring the existing compound-control range checks.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-97576 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 400cd78a63cc647412cf069c9851bdea2818340c/c7b1ef6dc57f4e57fe27cfdd3bf82033ed91ca34/ba1023d3a6d5d244d59f20c4ba6af4879ae08a9f/dc694a9929f7cb9c88ef91e45eb982b7bbe5a477 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
