Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function vdec_av1_slice_setup_tile of the component vcodec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: mediatek: vcodec: bound AV1 tile-start copy to the array capacity vdec_av1_slice_setup_tile() copies tile_cols + 1 / tile_rows + 1 entries into mi_col_starts[] / mi_row_starts[] from the bitstream tile_info. Bound the copy to the array capacity.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-97579 since 09/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability.
