CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc1 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component tipc. The manipulation of the argument if_name with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tipc: Dont send random pad bytes in RESET/ACTIVATE messages The interface name is passed in a fixed length (TIPC_MAX_IF_NAME) buffer. Replace the strcpy(data, l->if_name) with memcpy() so that the pad bytes are actually written (l->if_name[] is zero padded) rather than sending random bytes from the skb to the remote system. Replace two other strcpy() with strscpy().

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98097 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 48033a89356b8ae21a94db70c79bb6fcc91a23c2/4ab2977323d5f068a872126f7818d1aeb9e9ca0d/bee1459e57f2e0bd240c62f35c0a284291e27971/81c600c26302a27852ed8b19c5f2f647ea3555c9 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
