Darwin 1.0/9.1 Pseudo-Random Number Generator Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Darwin 1.0/9.1 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. Performing a manipulation results in Remote Code Execution. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2008-1146. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Darwin 1.0/9.1. This affects an unknown part of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A certain pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) algorithm that uses XOR and 3-bit random hops (aka "Algorithm X3"), as used in OpenBSD 2.8 through 4.2, allows remote attackers to guess sensitive values such as DNS transaction IDs by observing a sequence of previously generated values. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged for attacks such as DNS cache poisoning against OpenBSD s modification of BIND.

The weakness was released 03/04/2008 by Amit Klein (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trusteer.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1146 since 03/04/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40329), SecurityFocus (BID 27647†) and Secunia (SA28819†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-41333 and VDB-41332. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
