Darwin 1.0/9.1 Pseudo-Random Number Generator Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Darwin 1.0/9.1 and classified as critical. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. Executing a manipulation can lead to Remote Code Execution. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2008-1147. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Darwin 1.0/9.1 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A certain pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) algorithm that uses XOR and 2-bit random hops (aka "Algorithm X2"), as used in OpenBSD 2.6 through 3.4, Mac OS X 10 through 10.5.1, FreeBSD 4.4 through 7.0, and DragonFlyBSD 1.0 through 1.10.1, allows remote attackers to guess sensitive values such as IP fragmentation IDs by observing a sequence of previously generated values. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged for attacks such as injection into TCP packets and OS fingerprinting.

The weakness was disclosed 03/04/2008 by Amit Klein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trusteer.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1147 since 03/04/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40329), SecurityFocus (BID 27647†) and Secunia (SA28819†). The entries VDB-41333 and VDB-41331 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
