Details
A vulnerability was found in GnuPG up to 2.5.18 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Archive Extraction. The manipulation of the argument directory with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
gpgtar in GnuPG before 2.5.19 can allow file overwrite via crafted data in an archive. When extracting an untrusted archive with --directory (aka -C) into an existing directory containing a pre-existing symlink, gpgtar can follow that symlink and create or overwrite a file outside the selected extraction directory. The write is limited by the extraction user's filesystem permissions. An archive extracted into a fresh empty directory does not have this risk.
The advisory is shared for download at static.dev.gnupg.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-105712 since 10/05/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 2.5.19 eliminates this vulnerability.
