Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 arm64 percpu buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 and classified as very critical. This impacts the function __percpu_##name##_case_##sz/__percpu_##name##_return_case_##sz of the component arm64 percpu. The manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98248. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. This issue affects the function __percpu_##name##_case_##sz/__percpu_##name##_return_case_##sz of the component arm64 percpu. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64: percpu: Fix LSE operations on {8,16}-bit types The assembly for __percpu_##name##_case_##sz() and __percpu_##name##_return_case_##sz() doesn't use the 'sfx' macro argument to form the LSE instruction. Without 'sfx', a W register argument will imply a 32-bit memory location, and consequently {8,16}-bit ops will erroneously read and write 32 bits of memory when the LSE instruction is used. Fix this by appending 'sfx' to 'op_lse' to LSE instruction. It is not necessary (and not valid) to append 'sfx' to 'op_llsc', as 'op_llsc' is a register-register operation which does not access memory (and does not take a size suffix).

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98248 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d69ab4480e49bf925f4781afcc9f284affcb96b6/390742871a723b52de9b92a94c0d1c85a2531e3e/843ace1d0a39e9b1cfcbfb3856a7b0fbdd9cd003/8cf2093f5372952a9ebc805c418d45df7112cd14 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
