Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 mmc hsq mmc_hsq_pump_requests use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.157/6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. Affected is the function mmc_hsq_pump_requests of the component mmc hsq. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mmc: hsq: Fix use-after-free in retry work mmc_hsq_pump_requests() queues retry_work when request_atomic() returns -EBUSY; today sdhci-sprd is the only consumer that implements request_atomic(). The work is embedded in a devm-allocated mmc_hsq, but is never cancelled during driver removal. Work still pending at unbind can therefore run after the devm allocation has been released and dereference hsq->mmc and hsq->mrq. Use devm_work_autocancel() to cancel and drain retry_work before the devm allocation is released. By the time devres cleanup begins, mmc_remove_host() has already stopped the host, so no new requests can arm the work. This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98212 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c50d6515bffb148c2c12be6d587ec201dfab4c34/df2eb59fd9eb33663dc1053f5a4ed851e0aa1f67/8439bf262ce3267bcfee29d3c61605f1731a2271/45341b341642c377192c95e4d48e0a859cf85f42/5d132990475f02cfa1debe03d50b479432864ebd is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
