Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 mac80211 ieee80211_build_hdr cb memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. The affected element is the function ieee80211_build_hdr of the component mac80211. Executing a manipulation of the argument cb can lead to memory leak. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-98325. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function ieee80211_build_hdr of the component mac80211. The manipulation of the argument cb with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: set up the TX info early to fix failure paths The previous commit 2c51457d930f ("wifi: mac80211: free ack status frame on TX header build failure") cleaned up the leak, but still left the code a bit messy and the failed SKB didn't get reported to userspace. Fix this up by initialising skb->cb[] earlier, which allows using ieee80211_free_txskb() and therefore reports it for the failure in ieee80211_build_hdr(), and unifies the ieee80211_skb_resize() failure path with it.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98325 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch df711e9fa20d7e996711c7f43a11a71805bef78d/420fcc2fdeae6ecd682d2b1605a0a54c88aed4aa/36e6f0a5e6d7238f4023e77f423c1c1414374309/0fb37d2b6cb829cebdaea80f39011469f474bdcc/03d67414bd05b86029afc14535238a9393eac1c6/50d3d79dc0743b616afb00d01a626c76758721f7 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
