Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 mac80211 injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3 and classified as problematic. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component mac80211. The manipulation leads to injection. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98329. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component mac80211. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: don't allow injecting frames wider than the chanctx Frames injected on a monitor interface can carry a radiotap field requesting a bandwidth, which mac80211 passes down to the driver regardless of the the actual operational bandwidth. If the bandwidth requested is too wide, that triggers a warning in hwsim: WARN_ON(hwsim_get_chanwidth(bw) > hwsim_get_chanwidth(confbw)) Drop such frames entirely instead since they cannot be sent.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98329 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1055 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a5c715eda066cba5ce3372759188ba8636dca629/73f48f7e16cadfc74f444ccd10c1d3ae253e2e27/c69718519a81e87284494d0c6e6eb7bdd834707a/e14bf37bb2b3853012ff160131d1c6233f7a9cc9 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
