Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Access 2003/2007 (Database Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality in the library ACCWIZ.dll of the component ActiveX. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Microsoft Access Wizard Controls in ACCWIZ.dll in Microsoft Office Access 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP1 and SP2 do not properly interact with the memory-allocation approach used by Internet Explorer during instantiation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a web site that references multiple ActiveX controls, as demonstrated by the ImexGrid and FieldList controls, aka "Access ActiveX Control Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 07/13/2010 as ZDI-10-117 (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0814 since 03/02/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/18/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47712 (MS10-044: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982335)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110127 (Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-044)).

Applying the patch MS10-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9960. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (59889), Tenable (47712), SecurityFocus (BID 41442†), OSVDB (66294†) and Secunia (SA40554†). Similar entries are available at VDB-54083 and VDB-117828. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
