Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft Access 2003 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality in the library ACCWIZ.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument Uninitialized with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The FieldList ActiveX control in the Microsoft Access Wizard Controls in ACCWIZ.dll in Microsoft Office Access 2003 SP3 does not properly interact with the memory-access approach used by Internet Explorer and Office during instantiation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via an HTML document that references this control along with crafted persistent storage data, aka "ACCWIZ.dll Uninitialized Variable Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 07/15/2010 by Robert Freeman with IBM ISS X-Force (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1881. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/20/2021). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47712 (MS10-044: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982335)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110127 (Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-044)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9962.
