It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component FTP Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
CRLF injection vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary FTP commands via an ftp:// URL that contains a URL-encoded CRLF (%0D%0A) before the FTP command, which causes the commands to be inserted into an authenticated FTP connection established earlier in the same browser session, as demonstrated using a DELE command, a variant or possibly a regression of CVE-2004-1166. NOTE: a trailing "//" can force Internet Explorer to try to reuse an existing authenticated connection.
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was disclosed 03/17/2008 by Derek Abdine with Rapid7 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1368 since 03/17/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3576 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100128 (Microsoft Internet Explorer FTP URL Encoded CRLF Command Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 28208†) and Secunia (SA29346†). The entries VDB-1028 and VDB-3650 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
