Affected is the function CreateDIBPalette of the file win32k.sys of the component Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in the CreateDIBPalette function in win32k.sys in Microsoft Windows XP SP3, Server 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2, Vista Business SP1, Windows 7, and Server 2008 SP2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by performing a clipboard operation (GetClipboardData API function) with a crafted bitmap with a palette that contains a large number of colors.

The weakness was presented 08/06/2010 by Arkon with http://www.microsoft.com (Website). The advisory is available at ragestorm.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2739 since 07/14/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 902256 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90618 (Microsoft Windows win32k.sys Driver "CreateDIBPalette()" Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS10-098)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
