A vulnerability was found in Foxit Reader 4.x (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component FreeType2 CFF Font Parser. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the cff_decoder_parse_charstrings function in the CFF Type2 CharStrings interpreter in cff/cffgload.c in FreeType before 2.4.2, as used in Apple iOS before 4.0.2 on the iPhone and iPod touch and before 3.2.2 on the iPad, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted CFF opcodes in embedded fonts in a PDF document, as demonstrated by JailbreakMe. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2010 by Braden Thomas with FoxIt (Website). The advisory is shared at foxitsoftware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1797 since 05/06/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by jailbreakme in Python and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68080 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : freetype (ELSA-2010-0607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118377 (FreeType Compact Font Format (CFF) Multiple Stack Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at foxitsoftware.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
