A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in PHP 5.2.5 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function php_sprintf_appendstring of the file formatted_print.c of the component printf Functions. The manipulation of the argument format with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on availability. Integer overflow in PHP 5.2.5 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly have unspecified other impact via a printf format parameter with a large width specifier, related to the php_sprintf_appendstring function in formatted_print.c and probably other functions for formatted strings (aka *printf functions).
The bug was discovered 03/21/2008. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2008 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with SecurityReason (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1384 since 03/18/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
