A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 6.0/6.0 P5 Release/7.0/7.0 Beta4/7.0 Releng (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function printf in the library lib/libc/stdlib/strfmon.c. The manipulation of the argument format with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in libc in NetBSD 4.x, FreeBSD 6.x and 7.x, and probably other BSD and Apple Mac OS platforms allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via large values of certain integer fields in the format argument to (1) the strfmon function in lib/libc/stdlib/strfmon.c, related to the GET_NUMBER macro; and (2) the printf function, related to left_prec and right_prec.

The bug was discovered 03/27/2008. The weakness was presented 03/27/2008 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1391 since 03/18/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35111 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
