A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple QuickTime 7.4.4 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.4.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted VR movie with an obji atom of zero size.
The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was presented 04/04/2008 by Ruben Santamarta (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1022 since 02/26/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31736 (QuickTime < 7.4.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115775 (Apple QuickTime Multiple File Handling Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 7.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5931.
