The DNS client in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, and Vista uses predictable DNS transaction IDs, which allows remote attackers to spoof DNS responses.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was presented 04/08/2008 by Amit Klein (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0087 since 01/02/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2973 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31793 (MS08-020: Vulnerability in DNS Client Could Allow Spoofing (945553)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90432 (Microsoft Vulnerability in DNS Client Could Allow Spoofing (MS08-020)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
