Microsoft Windows Server 2003 vbscript.dll code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Performing a manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2008-0083. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Operating System). This affects an unknown part in the library vbscript.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) VBScript (VBScript.dll) and (2) JScript (JScript.dll) scripting engines 5.1 and 5.6, as used in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, do not properly decode script, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2008 by Peter Ferrie with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0083 since 01/02/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31795 (MS08-022: Vulnerability in VBScript and JScript Scripting Engines Could Allow Remote Code Execution (944338)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90431 (VBScript and JScript Scripting Engines Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-022)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5911.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40056), Tenable (31795), SecurityFocus (BID 28551†), Secunia (SA29712†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1019799†). The entries VDB-41881, VDB-41879 and VDB-41878 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
