The kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 do not properly manage a window class, which allows local users to gain privileges by creating a window, then using (1) the SetWindowLongPtr function to modify the popup menu structure, or (2) the SwitchWndProc function with a switch window information pointer, which is not re-initialized when a WM_NCCREATE message is processed, aka "Win32k Window Class Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 10/12/2010 by Tarjei Mandt with Microsoft as MS10-073 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2744 since 07/14/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Tarjei Mandt in ANSI C and been published 3 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49950 (MS10-073: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (981957)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90611 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Privilege Elevation Vulnerability (MS10-073)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-073 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
