Details
A vulnerability was found in LinPHA up to 1.3.2. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
plugins/maps/db_handler.php in LinPHA 1.3.3 and earlier does not require authentication for a settings action that modifies the configuration file, which allows remote attackers to conduct directory traversal attacks and execute arbitrary local files by placing directory traversal sequences into the maps_type configuration setting, and then sending a request to maps_view.php, which causes plugins/maps/map.main.class.php to use the modified configuration.
The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2008 by rgod (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1856 since 04/16/2008. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by EgiX and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41676), Exploit-DB (5392), SecurityFocus (BID 28654†), OSVDB (50229†) and Secunia (SA29724†). The entry VDB-47436 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
