Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenOffice up to 2.3.1 (Office Suite Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the OLE importer in OpenOffice.org before 2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an OLE file with a crafted DocumentSummaryInformation stream.
The bug was discovered 04/17/2008. The weakness was published 04/17/2008 with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0320 since 01/16/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/09/2019).
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in ANSI C and been published 5 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31996 (CentOS 4 / 5 : openoffice.org / openoffice.org2 (CESA-2008:0175)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165683 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update OpenOffice_org (SUSE-SA:2008:023)).
Upgrading to version 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6141.
