Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. Affected is the function tpm2_get_random of the component Tpm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tpm: fix off-by-four bounds check in tpm2_get_random() When the response carries the TPM2_ST_SESSIONS tag, tpm2_get_random() skips the 4-byte parameter size field before locating the random data, but the bounds check still validates the response length against TPM_HEADER_SIZE. A truncated response can pass the check and make memcpy() read up to 4 bytes past the response end, so stale buffer contents end up in the caller's random bytes. Fix this by checking the response length against 'offset', which already includes the skipped parameter size field.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98728 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch be54101992c2c5218be0e0a87827ccc96e3089af/e30a2406408d2df6d9cd48c2e59e913cf266a05a/42bb6216b861e892512128219ff23010d656ba14/9b522400bf5c082feb9a0037a053ea822a2c7e4d is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
