Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component nvme-multipath. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme-multipath: fix underflow in ANA log bounds checks The number of ANA groups advertised through Identify Controller sizes the ANA log buffer. The ANA log header and group descriptors independently supply the number of groups and namespace IDs to parse. Both bounds checks subtract an untrusted object size from ana_log_size before comparing the current offset. If the object is larger than the buffer, the size_t subtraction underflows and lets the parser read beyond ana_log_buf. Check the current offset before the first subtraction and compare each object size with the remaining buffer instead. This rejects inconsistent ANA data before dereferencing a truncated group descriptor or walking an oversized namespace ID array.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98726 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 03a0c21f0fd7a872953aae5714303d8f38d1e567/49e8a3224c91fd5fbf22f4adcca6c8209cfdd6fe/e5cdb0c0a51e8ff49914ae16ef5360010c40cc85/63fa2d9c9c37020bd2703fe2a6a38027b5abeb15 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
