Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. It has been classified as very critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component TTY. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tty: fix saved termios reset race Resetting saved termios state on device registration is needed where a minor number can be reused for an entirely different device and where the old settings may prevent the port from even being opened (e.g. when CLOCAL is not set). Not all TTY drivers guarantee that the minor number is no longer in use when registering devices however, something which can lead to a use-after-free when closing a TTY (and saving its termios) races with re-registration. Add a new TTY_DRIVER_RESET_SAVED_TERMIOS flag to request that any saved termios state is reset on registration and only set it for drivers that make sure that the minor number is no longer in use.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98750 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1572d86bcf0bcb848d20fc5e5de7ed6963034c2b/08bf919f041af9de372428bb0c938157ea144164/dcaf0251f847a45861e94c6617024a9455687d2f/8df07fe93573e9e548d6645273e9bcb6eb74059e is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
