Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 cdns3 cdns3_pci_probe null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. Affected by this vulnerability is the function cdns3_pci_probe of the component cdns3. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98756. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function cdns3_pci_probe of the component cdns3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: cdns3: Fix NULL pointer dereference in cdns3_pci_probe The Cadence USBSS controller is a two-function PCI device. The first probed function allocates the driver data and stores it with pci_set_drvdata(), while the second function reuses it via pci_get_drvdata() when pci_is_enabled() reports that the first function has already been probed. When the second function is probed while the first one has been enabled but has not yet set its driver data, pci_get_drvdata() returns NULL, and the subsequent wrap->devfn assignment dereferences a NULL pointer and crashes the kernel. logs: Call trace: cdns3_pci_probe+0xa4/0x300 local_pci_probe+0x44/0xa8 pci_call_probe+0x54/0x158 pci_device_probe+0x84/0x100 really_probe+0x184/0x3d0 __driver_probe_device+0x80/0x178 driver_probe_device+0x44/0xe8 __driver_attach+0xec/0x1f8 bus_for_each_dev+0x7c/0xe0 driver_attach+0x28/0x38 bus_add_driver+0x110/0x238 driver_register+0x64/0x128 __pci_register_driver+0x50/0x60 cdns3_pci_driver_init+0x28/0x38 do_one_initcall+0x5c/0x280 do_initcalls+0x104/0x1d8 kernel_init_freeable+0x140/0x218 kernel_init+0x28/0x1f8 ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 Return -EPROBE_DEFER in this case so that probing is retried after the first function has completed its probe.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98756 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 549c04df02f1bb5a10342f32e2c87f5d27c97279/d16046f1ace2691b6a946f022fe6dc215936880b/45b606418bae73c7cde9f0e57e5b0977c816a7c0/e5052f2c5c73c1dcca42bafc0bc737af2b2af059 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
