Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component fbnic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: eth: fbnic: Handle maximum standalone channels Standalone channels use one NAPI vector for each Tx and Rx queue. fbnic's allocation path excludes FBNIC_MAX_TXQS from that layout. A 64-Tx/64-Rx configuration therefore records 128 vectors but allocates only 64, leaving NULL entries that resource setup dereferences. Include the maximum vector count in standalone allocation.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98618 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9843e5fabd6ab296df9c025b1d0e5bf79a6b8a08/6c903188b67617070017305a325fa326f270a43d/16ff1023213cc39c1a7ce737205c2a1a53c3a716/1f4c73064a50f53d596c6f1d06d2d700f43c4b32 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
