Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 GUE parser validate_gue_flags buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. This affects the function validate_gue_flags of the component GUE parser. Performing a manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-98621. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. This affects the function validate_gue_flags of the component GUE parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: gue: reject invalid REMCSUM offsets The REMCSUM option carries an absolute checksum start and checksum field offset. gue_remcsum() passes them to skb_remcsum_process(), whose partial path stores offset - start in the u16 skb->csum_offset variable. If offset is less than start, this underflows. A forwarded packet can retain CHECKSUM_PARTIAL and reach a NETIF_F_HW_CSUM driver which trusts the metadata, leading skb_copy_and_csum_dev() to write two bytes about 64 KiB beyond the destination buffer. Reject reversed tuples in validate_gue_flags(), after the existing length validation, so all GUE parsers enforce the ordering in one place.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98621 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4b9bc21b2396c396d88dd909caaf73d5be6ff593/43efb1f997e976f386aa89716f55870cd2cff9ad/1eeec0c51fd5598da44080ed96bbd9880021c28b/1d664be4ca49d1696e85239236f4988dfc4653c3/97f907203321eee2cc9132d5c9eb47698fb41d35/40aeafbcbc7bc4018e8f74bbbb4d29ed8846f57f/c20f755338ca234e523dfc943719f194dfc1f903/2566866fc30965d915d0b52b5c3323b362619f0e is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
