It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. This affects the function virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl of the file drm/virtio of the component virtio_gpu. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: fix object leaks in virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl() virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl() calls drm_gem_object_release() on both the virtio_gpu_resource_assign_uuid() and drm_gem_handle_create() error paths instead of dropping the reference it owns, so obj->funcs->free() never runs and the virtio_gpu_object, the resource id and the host-side resource are leaked. Use drm_gem_object_put() instead.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98607 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 73ea38a89b923fa08047885a0845d1cd89261ead/eea473532a286cd1b13cddbec5c645989f43a3aa/88c60c06a2a5244f5dd32ec098e633add114890f/0455867bbd95ffa9d9db0a1c6dda500f8126232c/81c6769e069d703154087377d1749af2f1b74e49/24b6d5c7641412c9ebef0d4c8b888d49a0e6b880 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
