Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 virtio_gpu drm/virtio virtio_gpu_resource_create_ioctl memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function virtio_gpu_resource_create_ioctl of the file drm/virtio of the component virtio_gpu. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: fix object leak in virtio_gpu_resource_create_ioctl() virtio_gpu_resource_create_ioctl() calls drm_gem_object_release() on the drm_gem_handle_create() error path instead of dropping the reference it owns, so obj->funcs->free() never runs and the virtio_gpu_object, its pages and sg table, the resource id and the host-side resource are leaked. Use drm_gem_object_put() instead.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98608 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d33d5ef8225538f76e4598c09e2074834667bb8d/1586ee6107acab3b14510ac6af939f1253269df8/83c899104496677068fbbd2e42f28fd625f9cd85/77dee8e9106d62bf4f51b646c801f51f8ee77339/574ae9fa5fd3658bee23cb544fe5a0d1d750016a/b516446a25bf365cfffe3d7884ea6637f7f70862/749d8bb964b3414ef967d5ec80f2f1b5b3a510d9/477bc3068fc3777b9d8ffd79e265b0dfdf2d3a6b is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
