curl up to 8.22.0 HSTS insertion of sensitive information into sent data

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in curl. It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown functionality of the component HSTS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insertion of sensitive information into sent data vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-201. The code transmits data to another actor, but a portion of the data includes sensitive information that should not be accessible to that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

An authenticated HTTPS origin can supply an HSTS `max-age` value that the parser accepts, but time serialization later fails to process. On 64-bit systems, extreme max-age values compute an absolute expiry within standard time integer limits that exceeds calendar time structure bounds. During cache saves, the original HSTS file is truncated before writing a temporary replacement; when serialization fails, the temporary file is deleted, leaving an empty or partial cache. Because the save error is silently ignored during cleanup, curl exits successfully despite the data loss.

The advisory is shared at curl.se. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-87863 since 09/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/20/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
