Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in intranda goobi-viewer-core up to 26.4. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ExternalFilesDownloader.getFilename of the component External Files Downloader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Goobi viewer is a web application that allows digitised material to be displayed in a web browser. From version 24.03 to before version 26.05, ExternalFilesDownloader.getFilename() extracts the destination filename from a server-supplied Content-Disposition response header and passes it directly to Path.resolve() without stripping directory components. This allows for a malicious HTTP server that the viewer fetches from to supply an absolute path or ../ traversal sequences as the filename, writing attacker-controlled content to an arbitrary path writable by the Tomcat process. When targeting the deployed web-application directory, this yields remote code execution as the tomcat OS user. This issue has been patched in version 26.05.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-46652 since 05/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Upgrading to version 26.05 eliminates this vulnerability.
