A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Net-SNMP up to 5.4 (Network Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Resource Control. SNMPv3 HMAC verification in (1) Net-SNMP 5.2.x before 5.2.4.1, 5.3.x before 5.3.2.1, and 5.4.x before 5.4.1.1; (2) UCD-SNMP; (3) eCos; (4) Juniper Session and Resource Control (SRC) C-series 1.0.0 through 2.0.0; (5) NetApp (aka Network Appliance) Data ONTAP 7.3RC1 and 7.3RC2; (6) SNMP Research before 16.2; (7) multiple Cisco IOS, CatOS, ACE, and Nexus products; (8) Ingate Firewall 3.1.0 and later and SIParator 3.1.0 and later; (9) HP OpenView SNMP Emanate Master Agent 15.x; and possibly other products relies on the client to specify the HMAC length, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass SNMP authentication via a length value of 1, which only checks the first byte.
The weakness was published 06/10/2008 by Maurizio Agazzini with CERT (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0960 since 02/25/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Maurizio Agazzini and been published 2 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71433 (SNMP Version 3 Authentication Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20080610-snmpv3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165695 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update net-snmp (SUSE-SA:2008:039)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6219.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42967), Exploit-DB (5790), Tenable (71433), SecurityFocus (BID 29623†) and OSVDB (46088†).
