A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP 4.0/5.2.5/5.2.6 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function rfc822_write_address of the file php_imap.c of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. php_imap.c in PHP 5.2.5, 5.2.6, 4.x, and other versions, uses obsolete API calls that allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long IMAP request, which triggers an "rfc822.c legacy routine buffer overflow" error message, related to the rfc822_write_address function.
The weakness was presented 10/05/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2829. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
