A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.1.7 (Web Server) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file mod_autoindex.c of the component mod_autoindex.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in mod_autoindex.c in the Apache HTTP Server before 2.2.6, when the charset on a server-generated page is not defined, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the P parameter using the UTF-7 charset. NOTE: it could be argued that this issue is due to a design limitation of browsers that attempt to perform automatic content type detection.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2007. The weakness was presented 09/13/2007 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4465 since 08/21/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67632 (Oracle Linux 4 : httpd (ELSA-2008-0006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185076 (HP-UX Running Apache Web Server Suite Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02431)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
